Nutritionists have been interested in a long time in the dynamics of the lengthening of telomeres in the body and the way in which these figure in human health and life expectancy. The telomeres were first discovered in 1973 by Alexey Olovnikov.
He discovered that as he gets older, his telomeres get shorter. Finally, DNA replication and cell division cease completely, at which point you could die. However, a growing body of research is showing that certain nutrients play a very important role in protecting the length of telomeres.
The mechanism by which nutrients seem to affect telomere length is by influencing the activity of Telomerase, an enzyme that adds telómero repeats to the ends of its DNA. Thousands of studies have been published on Telomerase and are well known for maintaining genomic stability, preventing inappropriate activation of damaged DNA pathways and regulating cell aging.
In 1984, Elizabeth Blackburn, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF, discovered that the Telomerase enzyme actually has the ability to lengthen the telomere by synthesizing DNA from an RNA primer.
She, along with Carol Greider and Jack Szostak, was awarded along with the "Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009" for discovering the way chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the Telomerase enzyme.
This is great news because short telomeres are a risk factor, not only for the death itself but for many diseases
For example, telomere shortening has been linked to some diseases such as:
-Type 2 diabetes.
- Intestinal, testicular and splenic atrophy.
- Atherosclerotic lesions.
- Give us in the DNA.

In a study conducted in 2009 on the use of multivitamins and the length of telomeres were also associated with the use of Antioxidant formulas.
According to the authors: "Telomeres are particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress." In addition, inflammation induces oxidative stress and decreases the activity of Telomerase (once again recalling that Telomerase is the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomeres).
Astaxanthin crosses both the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier (something that beta-carotene and lycopene do not do), which provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection for the eyes, brain, and central nervous system.
Another feature that makes Astaxanthin different from other carotenoids is that it CAN NOT function as PRO-OXIDIZER.
Many antioxidants act as PRO-OXIDIZER (which means that they cause more OXIDATION instead of combating it), being present in the tissues with sufficient concentrations. For this reason, it is NOT RECOMMENDED to take many antioxidant supplements such as beta-carotene, for example:
Astaxanthin, on the other hand, DOES NOT WORK AS A PRO-OXIDIZER, even in high amounts, making it highly beneficial.
Finally, one of the most profound features is the unique ability to protect the "whole cell" from damage, both the water-soluble part and the fat-soluble portion of the cell. Other Antioxidants affect only one or the other portion. This is due to the unique characteristics of Astaxanthin, which allows it to reside inside the cell membrane, thus protecting the inside of the cell.
