Nutritionists have been interested in a long time in the dynamics of the lengthening of telomeres in the body and the way in which these figure in human health and life expectancy. The telomeres were first discovered in 1973 by Alexey Olovnikov.
He discovered that as he gets older, his telomeres get shorter. Finally, DNA replication and cell division cease completely, at which point you could die. However, a growing body of research is showing that certain nutrients play a very important role in protecting the length of telomeres.
The mechanism by which nutrients seem to affect telomere length is by influencing the activity of Telomerase, an enzyme that adds telómero repeats to the ends of its DNA. Thousands of studies have been published on Telomerase and are well known for maintaining genomic stability, preventing inappropriate activation of damaged DNA pathways and regulating cell aging.
In 1984, Elizabeth Blackburn, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF, discovered that the Telomerase enzyme actually has the ability to lengthen the telomere by synthesizing DNA from an RNA primer.
She, along with Carol Greider and Jack Szostak, was awarded along with the "Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009" for discovering the way chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the Telomerase enzyme.
This is great news because short telomeres are a risk factor, not only for the death itself but for many diseases
